We have a “Tween”…

Well, we officially have a “tween” in the house! Not a little girl and not quite a teenager yet – those sweet in-between years. Well, let’s just be honest and say they aren’t all sweet but our Ashtyn Grace is blossoming into something beautiful and sometimes the weeds have to be pulled so the flower can reach its fullest potential for beauty. That’s  true for all of us isn’t it?

Dear Ashtyn,

Eleven years ago you made me a mom. They sent us home from the hospital with no instruction manual. But daddy and I had a whole lot of love in our hearts. We were married just a little over two years and new to a life long call to ministry. We never knew we could love so much until we met you. You were the easiest baby – you slept so well and were content when you were awake. I learned how to make baby food and sew for you and we spent a lot of time together going on walks in the stroller and exploring the world that was so new to you. Now at eleven, you are blossoming into such a beauty. You have a sweet and gentle spirit and are marked by your compassion and intuition. You are on the cusp of the delicate, teetering years of becoming a teenager. Dad likes to call you a “teeny tween.” This morning as we were driving in the car, you were sharing your hopes and dreams for what you want to be known for one day – wrestling with the fear of being average – and the wanting to be truly good at something but unsure of what. I will cheer you on in life – whatever your dreams are. Dream big, my girl, but don’t be afraid to find your greatness in the mundane. I’m living my very own dream right smack in the daily grind of life….plodding as a daughter of the King, a pastor’s wife and a mom to four amazing children – and you are one of those amazing gifts – the dream-made-real that God dropped right into my life. May you lift your head high and humble and follow the amazing adventure God has for you. May you own that dream knowing that you can’t truly be great if you are not opening your hands to the One who IS great.
Happy Birthday precious girl…
