The Cost of Training for Ministry

“You will be wounded so that in the binding up of your wounds by the Great Physician, you may learn how to render first aid to the wounded everywhere…you’re training is extremely costly, for to make it complete, you too must endure the same afflictions that are wringing countless hearts of tears and blood…your own life becomes the hospital ward where you are taught the divine art of comfort.” (From Streams in the Desert, January 11)

Though this is true for every follower of Christ, it is especially true for the one whom He has called to vocational ministry. Sometimes we find ourselves questioning our circumstances or suffering….when God has a very focused purpose for it, namely, that in our wounds, we might run our hands over the scars and tell others of the comfort we knew in our same sufferings. There is great purpose friend….pastors wife….ministry wife….in your suffering. Though it seem long and dark and wearisome, it will come to an end and one day you will not ask why because you will know the cost and pass it on to those who walk similar roads. Ah, great joy to be had here, yes? Great joy in the purpose of our pain. Are we willing to count the cost?
